Netcare’s South African property division manages the property requirements of Netcare’s 56 hospitals. Responsibilities include refurbishments, upgrades, additions and interior design to the property portfolio. Stringent financial measures are in place to ensure adequate return on investment, maintaining non-income producing spend to a minimum and ensuring that the cost per bed and area per bed ratios remain at optimum levels.

Netcare operates and controls 44 hospitals of which 41 properties are owned. The property portfolio was recently valued at R9 581 million. At 30 September 2007, Netcare operated or managed a further 12 hospitals through associate investments (including Community Hospital Group (CHG)). In October 2007, Netcare acquired the remaining interest in CHG, adding five hospitals with 682 registered beds.

Netcare continued to make significant investments in existing facilities and equipment. During the year, two new hospitals were commissioned in South Africa, the Alberlito Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal and the Blaauwberg Hospital in the Western Cape. These facilities added 219 beds and eight operating theatres to the portfolio. Investments made in new facilities included the ICU units at Parklane, Linksfield and Akasia, trauma units at Pretoria East and Sunward Park, a neuro vascular unit at Unitas, cardiac catheterisation laboratories at St Augustines and St Annes and upgrades to several facilities, adding a further 116 beds.

Netcare’s current projects in development include the construction of oncology units at Clinton and Unitas, a catheterisation laboratory at Christiaan Barnard Memorial, a trauma unit at Greenacres, a maternity theatre and ICU at St Annes, a maternity ward at Clinton, a trauma unit at Linksfield and the expansion of the Umhlanga hospital.
